Assignment: 

 

XLS was a renowned telecom company of Pakistan. XLS was losing its 

market share and resultantly profits because of intensive competition in 

telecom sector. The overhead cost of this company was higher than its 

competitors. To reduce this cost CEO of this company decided to downsize. 

He announced that more than 10% of the work force will be laid off. As 

many as 500 employees received early retirement. Although CEO's 

ambitious cost-cutting plans were aimed at improving the financial 

performance of XLS but layoffs are rarely painless. Those who retain their 

jobs often face new obstacles and difficult adjustments. They have to take 

over the task of colleagues who are now gone. Survivors may lose trust in 

the company and may experience "survivors' guilt" for being allowed to 

remain in organization, while their other colleagues have been forced to 

leave. Any rumors of additional layoffs only add to the stress, making 

employee more fearful and interfering with their ability to focus on their 

work. XLS must face the immense challenge of keeping the workforce 

motivated while creating a firmer foundation for profitable operation in the 

years ahead. 

 

 

Question 

 

1.  According to expectancy theory of motivation, how XLS's layoffs affect the 

survivors' motivation? Give logical reasons to support your answer.

sta 630 idea True Experimental Design: A true experimental design is one in which the researcher manipulates the Independent Variable (or variables) to observe its effect on some behavior or cognitive process (the dependent variable) while using random assignment of participants to groups in order to control external factors from influencing the results. Without both manipulation of the IV and random assignment of participants, you do not have a true experimental design and, as a result, can't establish cause and effect. Quasi Experimental Design: This is one type of experimental design that is very similar to the True Experimental Design with one key difference. If you recall, for an experimental design to be classified as a True Experimental Design, it must meet two criteria; 1) Random assignment of participants to groups, 2) Manipulation of an internal variable A Quasi- Experimental Design is exactly the same EXCEPT that there is no random assignment of participants to groups. That is the only difference between the two types of designs, but it is a very important difference. Without both random assignment and manipulation of an IV, a researcher can't make cause and effect conclusions. Sometimes it just is not possible to randomly assign participants to groups. An example of a quasi-experimental design would be a study in which you examine the effects of smoking on respiratory functioning. You might have people who smoke 1 pack a day and 2 packs a day smokers, but you can't really assign them into these groups (is it ethical to make people who smoke 1 pack a day now smoke 2?) You would then run your study, but when you make conclusions, you can't make any cause and effect conclusions.

3rd Convocation of Virtual University of Pakistan Virtual University of Pakistan is holding its 3rd Convocation in six separate ceremonies at Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta and Multan. In this context, the first ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Expo Centre Lahore. Please note the following: Graduates who wish to attend the convocation at Lahore, should confirm by visiting: http://www.vu.edu.pk/convocation  positively by Thursday May 10, 2012. Participating graduates may be accompanied by one parent/guardian as specified by them during registration/re-confirmation Invitation Cards will only be issued to students who register their participation as given above Entry will not be allowed without invitation cards issued by the University For any further information please email convocation@vu.edu.pk  NOTE: Students who have completed their degree requirements during Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 are eligible to participate.
